Overview

Biotechnology (BT) is being acclaimed as the new frontier for knowledge development at national as well as international levels. The Bio-Tech industry is expected to boom in India as well as over the world. Since BT is a knowledge intensive industry, it is expected that India will have a competitive advantage and will be able to take full advantage of this opportunity, as has happened in the case of the IT industry.

To ensure that this opportunity is fully utilized and developed for national economic benefit, a vital need will be of trained manpower, both technological as well as managerial.

Managerial manpower, with BT specialization, will be needed to play an entrepreneurial role and to manage effective and efficient commercial utilization of the BT research outcomes. The BT focused managers will also monitor the socio-economic and ethical issues so that the technology is harnessed and applied for the holistic betterment of mankind.

Looking to this future need and opportunity, University of Pune has taken a path-breaking initiative to help catalyze and direct this technology revolution. We have launched a two-year full-time MBA program in biotechnology i.e. MBA (Biotechnology) (MBA-BT) from the academic year 2002-2003. This is the first such program in any Indian University/Institute and probably the world.
